This week has been a fun one.
I almost fell off a 10-foot ladder (from the very top), relied on my old AV skills to finish the network build in the office, and... oh yeah... built an integrated optical POS system.
Thanks, OpenAI.
Claude... we need to talk.
For our new business, we made the decision that whenever it made sense, we were going to build it ourselves. So instead of buying a traditional point-of-sale system, we built one from the ground up.
Building it ourselves allowed us to customize the workflow in ways that simply aren't possible with an off-the-shelf system. Every decision was made to reduce patient friction and allow our opticians to focus on helping people—not fighting software or hunting through inventory.
Our philosophy was simple: build something that assists an optician, not replaces one. The technology should stay out of the way and make them better at what they already do.
The biggest requirement wasn't speed or features.
It was security.
Because we manage Protected Health Information (PHI), every decision starts with protecting our patients' data. That means carefully selecting every vendor we work with and establishing Business Associate Agreements (BAAs) with any company that could come into contact with PHI.
Claude... it's complicated.
We worked through BAAs with our hosting provider and quickly realized we needed one AI-driven portion of our workflow to be HIPAA compliant.
OpenAI wins my "Let's Get Things Done" award.
Don't take that to mean they skipped their due diligence—they absolutely didn't. They made sure we were a legitimate business with a legitimate need for a BAA. But once the process started, the communication was excellent, expectations were clear, and the requirements were reasonable.
Now... my first AI love... Claude.

This one hurts a little.
Anyone who's read my previous AI posts knows I've probably recommended Claude more than any other model. That's what makes this harder to write.
The requirements were simply too steep for where we are today, or they came with cost-prohibitive stipulations that didn't make sense for our business. Maybe that changes in the future. I hope it does. Competition makes everyone better.
But today, OpenAI earned the win.
Once we cleared the BAA hurdle, we were finally able to build something that truly puts our customers first.
We built what I jokingly call the Swiss Army knife of optical POS systems.
Our appointment system talks to our inventory system. Our inventory system talks to our POS. The POS is optimized for tablets so our staff can move freely on the sales floor instead of being tied to a counter.
Even better, the system can automatically evaluate frame inventory, prescription requirements, and available lens stock to estimate accurate delivery dates while the customer is still standing in front of us.
That means fewer surprises, fewer callbacks, and better expectations from the very beginning.
Will our customers ever know how much work went into building it?
Probably not.
And honestly... that's the point.
The best technology is invisible. It doesn't impress you because it's complicated. It impresses you because everything just works.
That's the experience we're trying to build.
